The story takes place in the symbolic
space of a fish bowl, which serves as a backdrop for a series of
three episodes taken from everyday life: a man who futilely waits
for a woman and who decides to trick his solitude in order to
survive; a boxer who refuses to acknowledge his helplessness and
the spectacle of his own defeat, and
finally, a couple in danger that cannot resist the frightful
landscape that is right outside their window. In short, the viewpoint
of a human being in crisis and the condition of being a tiny fish in a
giant bowl whose destiny he cannot control.
Manuela lives alone in a building downtown and has just ended a
relationship, which only makes her want to be alone. Her friend Claudia
tries to cheer her up but Manuela is reluctant and in deep lethargy. The
arrival of a new neighbour right in front of her catches her attention.
He is Mauricio, a blind musician. Manuela slowly begins to feel
attracted to him in a subtle process of seduction through music and
sound.
Nina is a woman who has been married for 10 years. She lives in
Valparaíso, between the hills and the ocean. With the years, the
relationship with Lorenzo, her husband, has cooled off. The marriage is
submerged in the routine of those who believe that although there is
love, there is no more opportunity. However, the letters of a man in
love break the relationship’s apparent tranquillity, making Nina dream
with the possibility of a new love. They are letters of deep poetry that
make her dream and seduce her. Very intrigued, Nina phantasies about
the identity of her lover, who is closer than she thinks.
Three women are locked in the airport’s Ladies Room. Elisa, the main
character, is minutes away from taking off to Canada to meet her husband
who lives and works there. Soledad is coming back from a long
backpacking tour and Nuria is heading to a medical conference on asthma.
The confinement becomes a therapy that lets each woman’s truth out. In
the context of this unexpected meeting in the Ladies Room and the
restless presence of other women, Elisa will reflect on her real
emotions and will question the path she chose to walk in life.
Nicolás is angry. Once again they broke into his house and took his
bike away. He could swear to have seen a suspicious man hanging around
his block that day. So, the city half destroyed by an earthquake and the
curfew imposed by the military government do not matter, he goes with
his mother to the Court to identify the thief. But he sees more than he
would want and, after discovering the threads that join him to that evil
place, he is not certain about the meaning of State of Catastrophe, but
he thinks he has a lead.
